iStandard exclusive interview with Judah
Interview by: Kristen Teesdale
What’s up, Judah. Happy to catch up with you and talk with you a little bit about your work. When you started producing music, was it initially a hobby or did you know it would become a career?
Peace and I appreciate you taking the time out to holla at me. When I first started it was out of pure love for music and just a creative outlet. I loved how records sounded and how producers and artists came together to form a cohesive record. It was amazing and now that I know how it’s done, it makes it even more amazing.
What equipment do you most utilize in the studio?
I’m a dinosaur when it comes to making beats so I’m still on my MPC 3000 and MPC 60 and 2000xl.
A major movement that’s been consistently present in DC’s music scene is go-go. How do your beats reflect that go-go influence?
My beats have the swing of the go-go sound and that’s about it. Go-go is go-go and we have that. I’m trying to make stuff that goes worldwide.
The DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia) is really spread out. How have managed to garner a following in a metro area that lacks the density some other major cities have?Well I was one of the first to do a lot of different creative things in the DMV – from mix-tape to introducing new artists like Wale and XO of Diamond District to DMV Day Photoshoot…I just always tried to be a taste-maker and trendsetter.
You’ve schooled many local up-and-coming artists on the importance and procedure of self-promotion. What are the first lessons you give when teaching them how to market themselves?
Choose projects and music releases wisely and whenever you do something that garnishes attention, let the world know what you did.
Which artists would you most like to work with in the future?
Kanye.
What’s next for you? Where can fans find you online?
New Wale project, a record with GLC, Laws, Bossman and Carlitta Durand (of Little brother Fame.)
