Blog Entry #8 Haiti

On January 1, 1804, Haiti was the first black colony to end slavery and become a free republic. It also has a rich cultural tradition with African roots. However, Haiti is still a very poor country which has been demonized and ignored by many nations and writers.  Some consider the Haitian’s as poor, ignorant, diseased, or devil worshipers.  After the devastating earthquake, Haiti has been the center of attention, but still is not getting the type of support they need.  Blacks in the US and abroad can bring attention to Haiti’s role in the Black world by raising awareness of their accomplishments in America.
