Exclusive interview with Stephen “Spliff” Hacker [Spliffington Management]
Hey Spliff! Congratulations on your client Drew Money’s recent placement on Nicki Minaj “Right Thru Me”. How did you get that record placed?
Thanks. I have an ongoing relationship with Cash Money, my producers have done records on nearly every release thats come out on the label the last few years. Nicki is a phenomenal artist that I made sure to pursue. I knew Drew Money’s sound would compliment her style so it seemed like a perfect match. She loved the track that Drew made and added her magic to it and Voila! She sounds incredible on it.
You have been running Spliffington Management since 2005, what are your pros and cons about producer management?
Well, first and foremost you have to believe in your product. I stand by my guys’ sound and know that they can be an asset to any artist. I’ve been working on this side of the business enough time to know that even if you have the best beats in the world, they’re ultimately nothing if don’t have access to the right artists. Which is why having the right people in place such as myself and other key players, bridges the gap to get those songs you need to stay alive in this business.
Who are your current clients?
Drew Money, Streetrunner, I.N.F.O. (acronym for I’ll Never Fall Off) and the legendary Alchemist.
Explain exactly what your company does for your clients.
I find a home for the music my clients create. Its difficult for a producer to completely focus on making music let alone try to sell it to world renowned artists. I make sure my guys are constantly working and giving me new material that I can get in the hands of artists looking for that next hot record. Hip hop primarily is a 50/50 split between songwriter and producer so in effect, they rely on each other to deliver a record. I make sure that my clients music finds the right artist, that it gets commercially released and that they are getting properly compensated. Obviously a lot goes on to make this come to fruition. If it means getting my clients working with songwriters, getting them publicity and things like that, I make sure it gets done.
Which artists your clients haven’t worked with would you love to have placed on their projects?
Well right now, we’re gunning for Rihanna, Jay-Z, Snoop, Justin Bieber, the list goes on. Its just a matter of time. I’m very confident the work we all have put in over the years will continue to pay off and those opportunities will reveal themselves soon enough.
What’s next for you and Spliffington Management?
Just taking my clients to another level. Nicki’s project is one of the most anticipated in years and Drew Money has multiple records on there. Her album comes out November 23. I have 2 song deals with Cash Money Records, so expect to see my guys working with their whole roster in the future. I just want to keep my guys working on bigger and bigger projects.
Do you have any advice for up and coming producers and/or producer managers?
Pay your dues, be humble and respectful. Success doesn’t happen overnight and considering the economy today, it might not be a very healthy career choice. However, if you can get with the right people and make hit records, you should be just fine.
